Jenny Gray - Abstract Color

"Pieces of Wonderful"

JENNY GRAY

January 8th - February 2nd, 2013

Artist Reception

Friday, January 11th,  7-9pm

Location:

   Mary Lou Zeek Gallery 2
             1730 Fairmount Avenue South
Salem, Oregon  97302

For the last few years my work has been about layers, covering, hiding, censoring and the control I have to only show part of the story. We all have and use this power everyday to show people only what we want to show them about ourselves, both physically and psychologically.

I often start a painting with marks or colors representing specific emotions, places or people. Then I take this raw “information” and add, subtract, cover and layer. I like exploring layers and the tension of knowing something is underneath but you can’t know it fully. I create very much on a gut-level, they are improvised with a head full of remembered feeling and images.
My paintings are about being human, expressed through the paint, my paintings are also about the freedom of the paint itself; rough, fast, busy, quiet, thoughtful, hidden or in your face.

I am visually influenced by a wide range of subjects; the northwest landscape, barns, fences, typography, the desert and ephemera.
