Essential Relationships
For
the month of April, the Mary Lou Zeek will be showing works by artists Kristin Kuhns
and Patricia Giraud. Both artists will
be exploring the human form and relationships with the natural environment.
For Patricia, working with horses for decades allowed the opportunity to
observe how they function and think and to celebrate their form, their nature.
Inspired, Giraud began recording, through photography, the essential
relationship between horse and rider. The process-rich medium of printmaking
has brought a new dimension to her explorations on paper. Patricia’s intaglio
gives her a variety of tools with which to express anatomy, forms shaped by
light and shadow, large forces at work and intimate moments. Initially, the
horse was chosen as a totem around which the nuances of relationship, trust,
vulnerability and stewardship were considered. More recently, she has expanded
the scope of “relationship” to include figures in natural environments–drawing
upon memory and interpreting the shapes, textures found in the landscape.
“As
Temple Grandin says, "Animals make us human," my works are trying to
conjure a quality of interaction between horse and person from a pared-down
place, from a core of instinct that elicits care, respect, love and vulnerability.
Kristin Kuhns traditionally, has used thread and paint on canvas to interpret our interactions with the domestication of land and land use. In the last few years, Kuhns has spent time outdoors which has included time with horses. The paintings are considering thoughts of the domestication of horse, land and the individual, and herself.

Since
1980, Kuhns has been an exhibiting studio artist and graphic artist working in
print media as well as the building of display props, thus implementing a
diverse range of materials and skills. This problem solving process has
become a seamless extension of her creative methodology. Since the Mary
Lou Zeek Gallery opened in 2001, Kuhns has exhibited her work, primarily
involving paint and fiber on canvas as well as wood and ceramic constructions.
